Activities of BMTPC during The World Habitat Day/Week 2004

The Council was actively involved in a number of programmes and projects during the week long celebrations of the Habitat Week organized by the Ministry of Urban Employment & Poverty Alleviation, Govt. of India. On 4th October, 2004, the Council had put up an exhibition at the main function of the World Habitat Day Celebrations at India Habitat Centre. The Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C) for UEPA, Kumari Selja inaugurated the exhibition. The Lt. Governor of Delhi, His Excellency Shri B. L. Joshi also visited the exhibition and louded the efforts of the Council in promoting low-cost housing building materials and technologies.

At the main function held in STEIN Auditorium, India Habitat Centre, Lt. Governor of Delhi Hon’ble Shri B. L. Joshi released the following publications of the Council:

  1. Directory of Indian Building Materials and Products with information on Nepal and Bhutan 2004-05 (Sixth Edition).

  2. Special Monograph on the theme of the World Habitat Day 2004 “Cities – Engines of Rural Development”.

Both the Lt. Governor of Delhi and the Hon’ble Minister complimented the Council in bringing out high quality publications to befit the occasion.  

On 6th October 2004, the Council participated in a function organized by the National Cooperative Housing Federation of India (NCHF) by putting up an exhibition on innovative cost-effective technologies at Ashoka Enclave Cooperative Group Housing Society Ltd., Dwarka Phase-I, New Delhi. Several house holders living in Dwarka sub-city visited the exhibition and learned the usefulness of adopting new technologies in construction activities.

On 8th October 2004, the Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C), UEPA, Govt. of India inaugurated the Model Toilet Structures (4 in nos.) at MCD Model School, Indian Airlines Colony, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi. The Model Toilet blocks have used new materials and technologies like: 

  1. Rat trap bond masonry in burnt clay bricks and fly ash bricks. (Savings in 25% brick quantity and utilization of industrial waste).

  2. Precast Ferrocement Roofing Channels for roof. (Savings in 50% of concrete volume and shuttering costs).

  3. Plantation wood door shutters. (Saves forest timber).

  4. Angle iron door frames. (Saves forest timber).

The structure is a model toilet designed for primary school boys and girls with the basic minimum requirements fulfilling codal provisions. The structure while demonstrating the use of new materials is also sensitive to the use through the right anthropometrics.

The well attended function was addressed by the Mayor of Delhi, the MLA of the Constituency (R. K. Puram), Councillor of the local area, Secretary and Joint Secretary of the Ministry of UE & PA, Govt. of India and Additional Commissioner of MCD. The children of the MCD school exhibited their talents by performing skits focusing on the theme of World Habitat Day “Cities – Engines of Rural Development”. There were also dance show and songs by the young children.

On 9th October, 2004, Director General and other staff members of the Council participated in the run organized by the Sports Authority of India at the National Stadium.
