This publication is based on the study undertook by BMTPC for assessing housing needs in urban and rural sectors and the demand that will be generated for key building materials for sustainable housing construction activity. The study aims at forecasting the growth in different types of households in urban and rural areas, based on their affordability pattern and changing trends in housing typology. The study, thus seeks to integrate the housing requirements, expenditure patterns at national level, requirements of key building materials and the changing trends in choice of materials. It provides a long term perspective on requirements and shortfall upto the year 2011, while disaggregating the requirement of additional housing stock from non-residential and other forms of construction.

The Atlas gives information on all vulnerable areas that have been mapped indicating the expected intensities of natural events like earthquakes, cyclones and floods that can occur in different areas. Beside containing a hazard maps of India, the atlas also includes the maps for each State and Union Territory, thereby indicating the vulnerability upto district level. It also gives the expected risk levels of different types of housing stock existing in each district. The Vulnerability Atlas gives State-wise hazards maps and district-wise damage risk tables for all States and U.Ts. The information and data given in the Atlas can be utilised for preparing damage scenarios for individual districts of states for a possible occurrence of an hazard, and to formulate suitable strategy to prepare the community for any eventuality. The information given in the Atlas will help the planning agencies, the State and district administrations and the community at Panchayat levels in raising the level of awareness about the possible risk in the disaster prone areas and the measures required for preparedness and mitigation on scientific and realistic basis.

The book on “Building a Hazard-Resistant House - A Common Man’s Guide” is primarily meant to help the house owners, to build a safer house to live in, and to ensure the safety of his family in case of a likely future disaster. This Guide will be useful especially where the house-owner does not seek the guidance of an architect or an engineer, and depends fully on the technical services of a local contractor or artisan. In short, this Guide is prepared with view to help the “house owners of tomorrow” in ensuring that the houses that they are going to get built are going to be hazard-resistant and long lasting.

The publication on Improving Earthquake Resistance of Housing: Guidelines is the updated version of BMTPC’s earlier version with the same title which was brought out in 2001. However, since then lot of changes have taken place as regards the strategy of Indian subcontinent is concerned towards combating earthquake risk. The guidelines incorporate all the modifications being incorporated in Indian Standards. A separate annexure is added on Confined Masonry Technology as an alternative to the masonry construction reinforced at critical point being practiced in India for earthquake safe construction. This document would serve as an explanatory handbook on the various clauses of Indian Standards on Earthquakes which are important from the point of view of designing new buildings or improving resistance of existing building stock. The guidelines are in particular written keeping in mind that the major stock of buildings in India comprise of masonry buildings made up of mud burnt/un-burnt bricks and blocks & stones which are yet seldom designed for gravity and earthquake loads.

A long coast line of about 7500 km of flat terrain, shallow continental shelf and high population density makes the coastal areas of India extremely vulnerable to high velocity winds, moderate to high storm surges riding over astronomical tides and very heavy rains. The vulnerability of these areas to high sea waves became evident during the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami which caused very heavy loss of lives in the state of Tamil Nadu and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. In view of increased vulnerabilities of the coasted areas, BMTPC brought out the revised publication “Guidelines for Improving Wind/Cyclone Resistance of Housing: 2010”. The guidelines have an added chapter on Cyclone cum Tsunami shelters design. This document would serve as an explanatory handbook on the various clauses of Indian Standards on Wind resistant design of new buildings or improving resistance of existing building stock.

The Guidelines on Improving Flood Resistance of Housing not only dwells upon the planning aspects of houses in flood prone areas but also on construction technologies to be adopted to make them safe in the event of inundation. The guidelines are written in simple and easy to understand language and can easily be implemented at field. The publication is the updated version of BMTPC’s earlier version of the guidelines. The information given in the guidelines would serve as a useful repository for all stakeholder involved in planning and rehabilitation of flood affected areas.

BMTPC and IIT Kanpur, launched the “IITK-BMTPC Series on Earthquake Tips” in early 2002. This publication, containing all the 24 Tips, is targeted at persons interested in building construction. The Tips cover topics such as basic introduction to earthquakes and terminology such as magnitude and intensity, concepts of earthquake resistant design, and aspects of a seismic design and construction of buildings. Utmost care is taken to ensure that despite complexity of the concepts, the Tips are simple and unambiguous. To ensure the highest quality of technical contents, every Tip is carefully reviewed by two or more experts, both within and outside India and their feedback is used before finalizing the Tips. |
