The
Atlas gives information on all vulnerable areas that have been mapped
indicating the expected intensities of natural events like earthquakes,
cyclones and floods that can occur in different areas. Beside containing
a hazard maps of India, the atlas also includes the maps for each State
and Union Territory, thereby indicating the vulnerability upto district
level. It also gives the expected risk levels of different types of
housing stock existing in each district. The Vulnerability Atlas gives
State-wise hazards maps and district-wise damage risk tables for all
States and U.Ts. The information and data given in the Atlas can be utilised for preparing damage scenarios for individual districts of
states for a possible occurrence of an hazard, and to formulate suitable
strategy to prepare the community for any eventuality. The information
given in the Atlas will help the planning agencies, the State and
district administrations and the community at Panchayat levels in
raising the level of awareness about the possible risk in the disaster
prone areas and the measures required for preparedness and mitigation on
scientific and realistic basis. |

This
publication is based on the study undertook by BMTPC for assessing
housing needs in urban and rural sectors and the demand that will be
generated for key building materials for sustainable housing
construction activity.
The study aims at forecasting the growth in different types of
households in urban and rural areas, based on their affordability
pattern and changing trends in housing typology.
The study, thus seeks to integrate the housing requirements,
expenditure patterns at national level, requirements of key building
materials and the changing trends in choice of materials. It provides a
long term perspective on requirements and shortfall upto the year 2011,
while disaggregating the requirement of additional housing stock from
non-residential and other forms of construction. |

Guidelines
For Improving Earthquake Resistance of Housing76 Pages, Rs. 350 + 75 Postage |
There has been a general demand for issuing the technical guidelines for retrofitting of existing houses and construction of new houses for use by professional architects, engineers and construction agencies to incorporate disaster resistant construction methods and promote better land-use zoning practices in the hazard prone areas. These
guidelines would be found useful by design and construction
professionals particularly those involved in retrofitting and
construction of buildings and the house owners in general.
Local bodies would find these guidelines useful specially at the
plan approving stage to ensure adequate provision of disaster resistant
features in the construction of buildings. These
guidelines cover features from earthquake safety view point such as
silting and foundations, architectural design features, structural
analysis and design, construction and strengthening features in load
bearing walls, construction and strengthening features of roofs and
floors, repair and strengthening of damaged buildings and seismic
retrofitting of existing weak buildings. |

Guidelines
for Improving Wind/Cyclone Resistance of Housing50 Pages, Rs. 350 + 75 Postage |
The aim of these guidelines is firstly, to briefly explain the action of wind on buildings and state the general principles of planning and design; secondly, to bring out details to prevent the non-structural damage in the various buildings; thirdly, to deal with the safety aspects of traditional non-engineered buildings; and finally, to suggest retrofitting details which could be adopted in existing buildings to minimise the damages under high winds. Suggestions are also included for safety against storm surge. These
guidelines deal with the construction of wind / cyclone resistant
buildings of both engineered and non-engineered types.
The proposed measures are generally applicable to wind resistant
construction, but have particularly been framed keeping in view the
regions having wind velocity greater than or equal to 39 m/sec.
Wind zoning map of India is given in IS: 875 (Part 3) – 1987.
The same has been redrawn for various States and Union
Territories on 1:2.5 million scale in the Vulnerability Atlas of India
(1997). Such
additional issues or provisions which are specifically useful and / or
required for cyclone affected regions are highlighted. To improve the wind / cyclone resistance of existing buildings, some retrofitting measures have also been presented. |
